The Scottish Koryu Association is a not for profit association that is dedicated to the promotion and study of 'authentic' Japanese martial arts in Scotland.
We are the Scotlands only 'Koryu' organisation. A Koryu art is one which was founded before Japan's modern era which began in 1868 with the emporer Meiji, this is often termed the Meiji era.

Although in Scotland and the UK there are many martial arts clubs that practice modern western variants of Japanese martial arts with western associations, and also clubs who may have links with Japanese organisations we are different in the fact that we only practice Koryu bujutsu and that our students have regular training opportunities with Soke himself.

Our membership is open to individuals our groups that are of good character that either wish to practice or already practice a Koryu art. In the case of an organisation wishin to join us they must practice an authentic koryu and not a gendai (modern style) or made up art wether western or Japanese in origin.

Beginners are welcome, and you don't need any special equipment to begin training beginning the practice of Hontai Yoshin Ryu is inexpensive. In the beginning a tracksuit or loose clothing is fine, and the training is catered to the individuals own ability and performance level if want to find out more please contact us for more information.

Hontai Yoshin Ryu is recognised as an authentic ryu with a verified lineage by the Japanese goverment's Nihon Kobudo Kyokai (or the Japanese Classical Martial Arts Association, which is part of the Nippon Budokan in Tokyo Japan). Hontai Yoshin Ryu have been not only been members of this body since its establishment but were also instrumental in it's founding.

Unlike many koryu arts, Hontai Yoshin Ryu is a 'Sogo Bujutsu' art or composite art. The teachings of the ryu include both empty handed and weapons ares alongside each other.

The teachings include Jujutsu, Chobo (6' staff), Kodachi (short sword), Tanto dori (knife taking), Hanbo (3' staff), and Kenjutsu / Iaijutsu (long sword), with the core teachings of the ryu being Jujutsu, Bojutsu and Kodachi. In order to be proficient in Hontai Yoshin Ryu all of these aspects are studied.

The techniques of Hontai Yoshin Ryu use the principles of gyaku (joint locks), kuzushi (breaking balance), nage (throwing techniques), atemi (striking), taisabaki (body movement) and irimi (entering).
